Counseling for an adolescent requires different therapeutic skills as those necessary for adults or children. Due to the stage of development among adolescents, and their need to 'separate', or rebel, from parents or those they view as controling people (such as teachers, step-parents, etc.), they are often resistant to standard forms of therapeutic intervention. It is very important to select a professional who has worked previously with adolescents, understands their developmental stages, enjoys working with this population and has a history of experience in this area.
