Adoptive and Foster Family Issues Print E-mail

Adoptive and Foster families have unique needs as they attempt to form attachments and build relationships with those who are not necessarily of their 'birth' family. Many families provide care for a child from their early birth, while other families assume unique responsibilities caring for children who are older or those with special educational, emotional or physicial needs.  A primary concern is that families assuming these roles understand that they will need to insure that they have resources that allow them to have time to 're-group' and address time and emotional stressors which may be associated with their new family situation.  Children who experience 'attachment issues' often need special counseling care to adjust positively within their new family.  It is important that couples understand the pressures put on their own relationship as they care for additional children, whether adoptive or birth children, and take steps to maintain their own relationship so that it is strong, so that they are effectiving co-parentings, have the same discipline and guidelines for management of the children, and so they set aside time for each other.  When selecting professionals to assist you in this area, select professionals knowledgeable about support resources available and who have had experience providing counseling, legal advice or financial advice for these individuals and families.
