Family Self Test: Six Secrets to Build Stronger Families
The simple info below helps rate a family's well-being with suggestions to strengthen your family. ALL families have weaknesses and strengths. ALL families have ability to grow stronger!! Create a table to measure each family member's input.
Rating Scale: 1. Make a copy of this page for each family member. 2. Have each individual family member write in their own rating! (Remember family members will vary on how they rate each issue and should feel comfortable expressing their views.)
Make a box that has 4 columns across, and 7 rows down. In first row, write (1 heading for each column): 1. Topic, 2. Actual, 3. Desired, and 4. Potential
In 2-6 rows, write (1 per row): Row 2: Commitment to Family Row 3: Open Communication Row 4: Showing Appreciation Row 5: Spending Time Together Row 6: Ability to Deal With Stress, Conflict & Crisis Row 7: Totals
Rate each of the Topics: 1-Not Satisfied 5-Somewhat Satisfied 10-Very Satisfied
- Place your rating under the column market "actual".
- Decide where you'd like your family to be in each area and mark this under "Desired".
- Subtract "actual" from 'desired' to find "potential". The total score in 'potential" suggests how much more strength your family could have by utilizing methods listed below.
TOTALS 1/Have each member rate how they view the family (each on a separate page). 2/Have each person add up points and score the family. 3/Compare your individual inventories and discuss the differences. 4/Look closely at the potential for wellness your family has. 5/Let each member help determine where family trouble spots are, what's caused them (example: not spending time together, lack of appreciation, poor communication, etc.). 6/Reach an agreement on the important areas for work and improvement in your family. 7/Get a firm commitment from each member to work as a team to realize your family's potential.
