Columbus Day was celebrated at request of President Benjamin Harrison, and has been celebrated every year in the U.S. since 1920. In 1971, Columbus day became recognized as a federal legal holidaym celebrated the second Monday in October each year. It is also celebrated by some Latin American countries as Día de la Raza (Day of the Race), honoring the Spanish heritage of the Latin American people.
